A MAD Gift I Got for Christmas

So, I got a lot of books for Christmas, being a reading nerd, and one of my favorites is “Good Day and Mad” by Dick DeBartolo. Dick is the Giz Wiz, as well as Mad Magazine’s Maddest Writer. He’s been writing for the magazine so long he must have been born writing a satire of his time in the womb.

The book is a remembrance of Bill Gaines, the publisher of MAD, and the amazing way he ran the magazine. It’s really a fascinating journey through what it was like to work for one of the most interesting bosses the world has ever known. I finished the book in about 24 hours, wishing for more, and especially wishing that I could someday get the chance to work somewhere like MAD was in its early days.

The great thing about the book is, although it’s out of print, you can buy it directly from Dick at his web site, or you can get it for making a donation to the Animal Haven Shelter, which is one of Dick’s favorite charities. And you get an autographed copy!

If all that isn’t enough to make you grab a copy, how about Sam Cat’s ringing endorsement. Look how much he was enjoying it!

My LOLCat, Starring Sam and Pumpkin

I created this LOLCat for the SPCA of Central Florida Meow March event.

Sam, the orange cat coming out of the couch, really likes to crawl into our couch as his private retreat when he wants to sleep. We call it his “Sam Cave” (kinda’ like the batcave.) I just had to wait patiently when I knew he would be coming out, to get this pic. Pumpkin is occasionally fascinated with Sam’s spelunking antics and she jumped up right before the shot.

If you live in Central Florida and love animals, the SPCA of Central Florida is a great place to find a friend, and a worthy cause to donate to. We got Sam there, and he’s a great cat. I think he learned a lot of his manners and his affection towards humans from the people at the SPCA.

There’s some neat information and a slow motion video of a cat drinking here . I should point out that though this site has the cat drinking milk, most cats shouldn’t actually drink milk since they aren’t built to digest it.

My Favorite Vacuum Maker Gets A Knighthood

Natasha and I bought a Dyson Animal Vacuum Cleaner a few years ago and it was one of the best purchases I feel we ever made in terms of quality and value. The vacuum sucks up dust like a black hole sucks up light. The pet attachment that comes with the Pet version is awesome for cleaning the cat furniture (and human furniture that has been claimed by cats).

So it’s good news to me that the inventor, James Dyson, has been awarded a knighthood.

Sassy Cat

I’ve been meaning to put some photos of Sassy Cat, the newest cat in our house, on the web site for a while. But Sassy is pretty shy, and it’s been tough to get some good pictures of her. She’s finally gotten comfortable with all of us, cats and humans included, so I managed to get some good pictures of her. Here she is, along with Pumpkin and Sam.

ASPCA “Greenies” Dog Treat Update

I linked to a story a few months ago about how Greenies dog treats might be bad for dogs. The ASPCA has written something on the Greenies issue that was an interesting read. While it doesn’t say the treats are completely safe, it does implicate owners for not paying attention to what they are giving their pets. The advice they give is very helpful for whatever treats you are giving your animals.
